Metal, Plastic & Wooden Frames

Wooden Picture Frames

Wooden picture frames are not as common as plastic and metal, but they are still used. Wooden frames are somewhat heavy and fairly hard to break. You want to make sure that the entire frame is smooth, otherwise you could get slivers, and also mess up your picture. Wooden picture frames make perfect for certain types of pictures. For example, if you’ve got a picture of a friend or a loved one out in the country, a frame would accent that nicely. Also, they can compliment old-looking photos, or photos in black and white. The good thing about wooden frames is that if you decide you want something more out of the frame, and you don’t want to spend more money on another frame, you can pretty much do anything you want to this frame. You can paint it easily, or you can add words or designs to it.

Metal Picture Frames

Metal frames are probably not as common as plastic frames, but more common than wooden ones. Metal frames make nice pictures look even nicer. There’s a smooth, shiny finish on metal frames and probably a neat cut to the frame itself. These frames can be heavy and a bit expensive, depending on where the frame comes from and what type of metal it’s made from. Metal picture frames are usually rustproof and stainless steel. The bad thing about metal frames is that once you’ve got the frame, you have to stick with it. If you decide you don’t want it anymore, you’ll need to go buy a new one instead of trying to add things to the frame. It’s very hard to change the metal frames; it’s hard to paint and glue things to. Metal frames make good gifts, because something about the elegance of the frame shows people that you care.

Plastic Picture Frames

Plastic frames are the most common frames used today. These are very light, and fairly inexpensive. People that get photos custom-framed usually have them framed in plastic. The glass used for plastic frames is Plexiglas, so they’re hard to break. The frame itself, however, is not very hard to break, so you want to be careful with the frame at all times. Sometimes, though, this frame can look cheap. You should make sure that when you frame a picture in plastic, the picture itself would attract all the attention, diverting it away from the frame. Because plastic frames aren’t very snazzy, people will focus their attention entirely on the photo. Plastic frames are normally not used to accent and add to pictures; they’re more or less just used to protect them.
